Inspiration of the song



The John Fowles novel, The Magus, created in 1965 was a prime inspiration in the creation of Hotel California. The story begins with a recent Oxford graduate and a hopeful poet taking a job teaching English. On a remote Greek Island, he taught English. He soon becomes friends with a wealthy owner of a grand estate, who then manipulates him through a carefully planned situation. This ultimately makes him question reality. Similarly, in Hotel California, this person finds themself in a strange but harmless place at first but then it evolves into something disturbing and inescapable. The place becomes somewhere "you can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave". They take this as an example of how fame can destroy your entire life.

      To come up with this cover art, the Eagles decided they needed some help. Kosh, who previously directed the beetles, which was a huge sensation at this time, stepped in to help get started. The inspiration came from the idea that you can check out but can never truly leave Hotel California. Choosing the hotel was the easy part because an iconic hotel would easily represent the song. Standing in a cherry picker with photographer David Alexander to capture the hotel, several shots were taken to capture the exact moment the sun would set behind the hotel. The photo taken would forever spread the word to the world what the Beverly Hills hotel looked like in California. Those who have never been to California would know this hotel from this song and its iconic album cover.     The entire song comes to a point where it is inspired by the American dream. Considering the name, America can be put into a box, such as California. The song encompasses materialism and excess, which they saw as the perfect relation to a hotel in California. Deriving the elements of the American dream, Don Henley saw the American Dream through his life in California. He described it as education, love, business, etc.  Henley shared the very common journey that many people had on their way to success, and that this song reflects his. The hotel started at the end of their innocence, he stated, which gave it the perfect symbolism. He felt like, for the first time, he was surrounded, and everything felt eerie, which he wanted everyone to feel when they started listening to the song.    The Story of... Some people may see it as a song that was just pieced together but there are many deeper meanings within the lyrics. The main inspiration was the American dream and how it journeys through different levels and how sometimes it can give you that scary feeling. They wanted to depict this feeling to the listener. The album cover itself was a journey to create. The decision of the hotel was easy because of how iconic the place was and what better to explain the story than a hotel in Beverly Hills.
